From The President: Winter 2014

Dear Friends of TASSA,

As we publish the first issue of 2014, I wish everyone a successful and prosperous year!

In this issue there are many examples of success stories from the Turkish Science Diaspora members. These stories and news are much needed in the wake of depressing news we get from our motherland. I am sure this is a small representation of all the good work Turkish Scholars are doing. Please share with us your accomplishments so that we can share them with the World.

The conference preparations are going well. Once again TASSA will put together a superb program. We need a few things from you:

  1. Be a TASSA member
  2. Register the conference as soon as possible and make your hotel reservations.
  3. Please help us identify Sponsors for the Conference. There is no registration fee and we rely on sponsors to defray the costs.
  4. Let us know whether you can help us with the Conference preparations.

Please read the article by Bulent Atalay. He delivers the exciting story behind the Statute of Ataturk, recently unveiled next to the Turkish Ambassador’s residence.  Professor Atalay elegantly explains how a few people made this happen and gifted the nation’s capital with the statute of a great world leader. Make sure that you visit the site when you are in DC. The statute is a remarkable piece of art.

Last but not least, please note the article by Ambassador Burns, titled “The Potential of Science Diasporas.” It is gratifying to see TASSA activities are being exemplified to other Science Diasporas in the United States.

As always, thank you for all your support and hope to see most of you in March at College Park.

Cheers,

Haluk Unal
