Funding Opportunities to Connect U.S. and Turkish Universities

Programs to Bring U.S. Student and Faculty Researchers to Turkey


We are happy to provide a report, which compiles a list of funding opportunities to connect U.S. and Turkish Scientists and Scholars through a variety of exchange programs. Under the separate sections, the list covers programs to bring both Turkish Scholars to the United States and U.S. scholars to Turkey.  These programs would offer a nice opportunity to bring the scientists and scholars together to initiate collaborations and further investigate extensive grant opportunities provided by several federal U.S. and Turkish agencies.

We hope TASSA community will utilize these resources effectively.TUBITAK Program 2216 – Research Fellowship Program for International Researchers: U.S. Master’s and PhD students are eligible to apply to receive partial travel costs and health insurance, up to $2,500 for research expenses, and $1250/month for up to 12 months.  More information can be found at http://www.tubitak.gov.tr/en.

TUBITAK Program 2221 – Fellowships for Visiting Scientists and Scientists on Sabbatical Leave:  U.S. scientists with a PhD are eligible to apply to receive travel expenses, health insurance, and $3,500/month for up to 12 months.  More information can be found at http://www.tubitak.gov.tr/en.

TUBITAK Program 2236 – Co-Funded Brian Circulation Scheme:  This program is a joint Co-Circulation Scheme of TUBITAK and the EC-FP7 Marie Curie Actions.  Researchers are hosted in a university, research institute or industrial company in Turkey.  A monthly gross salary between 4167 to 4792 Euros is provided for 20 to 24 months.  More information can be found at http://www.cocirc.tubitak.gov.tr.  

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program:  U.S. researchers and professors are eligible to apply to receive funding to carry out research, lecture, or consult with other scholars in Turkey.  More information can be found at http://exchanges.state.gov/us/program/fulbright-us-scholar-program.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program:  U.S. graduating seniors, graduate students, and young professionals are eligible to apply to receive funding to study, conduct research, and teach English in Turkey.  More information can be found at http://eca.state.gov/fulbright/fulbright-programs/program-summaries/student-program.

Ali Kuşçu Science and Technology Graduate Scholarship:  U.S. students are eligible to apply to receive funding for Master’s and PhD degree programs at Turkish universities in the fields of science, engineering, and technology.  More information can be found at http://www.turkiyeburslari.gov.tr/index.php/en/turkiye-burslari/burs-programlari.

Ibn-I Haldun Social Sciences Scholarship:  U.S. students are eligible to apply to receive funding for Master’s and PhD degree programs at Turkish universities in social sciences.  More information can be found at http://www.turkiyeburslari.gov.tr/index.php/en/turkiye-burslari/burs-programlari. 

İbni Sina Medical Sciences Scholarship:  U.S. students are eligible to apply to receive funding for Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degree programs at Turkish universities in the fields of medicine, dentistry, pharmaceuticals, nursing, and veterinary medicine.  More information can be found at http://www.turkiyeburslari.gov.tr/index.php/en/turkiye-burslari/burs-programlari.

Short Term Research Scholarships:  U.S. PhD students are eligible to apply to receive funding to study at a Turkish university.  More information can be found at http://www.turkiyeburslari.gov.tr/index.php/en/turkiye-burslari/burs-programlari. 

Marie Curie Actions – International Incoming Fellowships (IIF):  U.S. researchers going to EU Member States or Associated Countries, including Turkey, with a PhD or at least four years of full-time research experience are eligible to apply for an IIF.  IIF provides approximately 200,000 Euros of financial support for up to two years.  More information can be found at http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/about-mca/actions/iif/.

Marie Curie Actions – Career Integration Grants (CIG):  Experienced U.S. researchers with a PhD or at least four years of full-time research experience are eligible to apply for a CIG.  CIG grants provide support up to 100,000 Euros for a maximum of four years.  More information can be found at http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/about-mca/actions/cig/.  

International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES):  IRSES brings together a research organization from the United States with at least two research organizations from Turkey and the EU.   A monthly allowance to cover mobility costs will be provided to the exchange staff.  IRSES support can be provided for a period of 24 to 48 months and the maximum duration of the individual staff exchanges will be 12 months.  More information can be found at http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/about-mca/actions/irses/. 

 

Programs to Bring Turkish Student and Faculty Researchers to the United States

TUBITAK Program 2214/A – Research Fellowship Program for PhD Students:  Turkish PhD students who are accepted to a U.S. host institution are eligible to apply to receive travel expenses and $1,800/month for up to 12 months.  More information can be found at http://www.tubitak.gov.tr/en.

TUBITAK Program 2214/B – Scholarship Program for Joint-Degree PhD Students:  Turkish PhD students who are accepted to a U.S. host institution, with a Joint PhD Agreement, are eligible to apply to receive travel expenses and $1,800/month for up to 24 months.  More information can be found at http://www.tubitak.gov.tr/en.

TUBITAK Program 2219 – Research Fellowship Program for Turkish Postdoctoral Students:  Turkish researchers with a PhD who are accepted to a U.S. host institution are eligible to apply to receive travel expenses for research and spouse and $2,500/month for up to 12 months.  More information can be found at http://www.tubitak.gov.tr/en.

The Fulbright Visiting Scholars Program:  Turkish researchers and professors are eligible apply to receive support to carry out post-doctoral research or lecture in the United States.  More information can be found at http://exchanges.state.gov/non-us/program/fulbright-visiting-scholar-program.

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program:  Turkish graduate students and young professionals are eligible to apply to receive funding to study, conduct research, and teach Turkish in the United States.  More information can be found at http://eca.state.gov/fulbright/fulbright-programs/program-summaries/student-program.

Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program:  Turkish mid-career professionals are eligible to apply to receive 10 months of non-degree academic study at a U.S. host university in one of a number of fields, including agricultural and rural development; natural resources, environmental policy, and climate change; and technology policy and management.  More information can be found at https://www.humphreyfellowship.org/.

Cochran Fellowship Program:  Turkish staff of agribusinesses, government departments, universities, and other agricultural organizations can be asked to apply from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agriculture Services to participate in a U.S.-based study and training program.  More information can be found at http://www.fas.usda.gov/icd/cochran/cochranarchive.asp.

Borlaug Fellowship Program:  Turkish early and mid-career scientists and policymakers, who have a Master’s Degree or higher, are eligible to apply to receive support to spend between six and twelve weeks in the United States working on a research project related to topics that impact agricultural production.  More information can be found at http://www.fas.usda.gov/icd/borlaug/borlaug.asp.

NIH Visiting Fellow Program:  Non-U.S. scientists, including those from Turkey, with a doctoral degree or equivalent in the health sciences and not more than five years of relevant postdoctoral research are eligible to apply to be supported for up to two years at the NIH.  More information can be found at http://dis.ors.od.nih.gov/visitingprogram/03_vpawards.html.

NIH Visiting Scientist Program:  Non-U.S. scientists, including those from Turkey, with more than three years of postdoctoral experience are eligible to apply to be supported for up to two years at the NIH.  More information can be found at http://dis.ors.od.nih.gov/visitingprogram/03_vpawards.html.

Marie Curie Actions -- International Outgoing Fellowships for Career Development (IOF): Researchers from EU Member States and Associated Countries with PhDs or at least 4 years full-time equivalent research experience are eligible to apply to this program. The IOF Program provides salary for the researcher and a contribution to research-related costs up to three years to carry out studies in the United States or other countries outside of the researcher’s home country.  More information can be found at http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/about-mca/actions/iof/.

Study of the U.S. Institutes for Scholars:  Turkish university faculty, secondary educators, and other scholars are eligible to apply to receive support to spend up to one month at a U.S. host universities followed by a two week study tour.  More information can be found at http://exchanges.state.gov/non-us/program/study-us-institutes-scholars.

Study of the U.S. Institutes for Student Leaders:  Turkish undergraduate students are eligible to apply to spend five to six weeks for a U.S. study tour around topics, including global environmental issues and social entrepreneurship.  More information can be found at http://exchanges.state.gov/non-us/program/study-us-institutes-student-leaders.

The Community College Initiative Program:  Turkish undergraduate students in agriculture, applied engineering, business management and administration, early childhood education, information technology, media, and tourism and hospitality management are eligible to apply to receive funding for up to one year at a participating U.S. community college.  More information can be found at http://exchanges.state.gov/non-us/program/community-college-initiative-program.
