Marches for Science

TASSA President Prof. Haluk Unal and other representatives joined the
March for Science rally in Washington DC, on April 22, 2017.
TASSA representatives joined the March to celebrate the
many contributions Turkish Science Diaspora has made to the
advancement of knowledge in the United States and also to show
solidarity with all scientists and scholars in the United States who
are against the deep cuts in sciences, humanities, and art in Federal

In December 2016, TASSA participated in EURAXESS North America's 2nd
Annual Meeting of European Scientific Diasporas in Washington, D.C.

TASSA'18
Conference will be held on May 26-27, 2018 in Boston, MA at the Boston
University. The conference chair will be Dr. Selim Ünlü, Professor at
the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Boston
University.
TASSA conferences bring a very large number of
Turkish-American Scientists together and also provide a networking
opportunity for future collaborations.
TASSA team welcomes all Turkish-American Scientists and Scholars to

The Turkish Physicists Network
Meets in New Orleans
The Turkish Physicists Network (TPN) met in New
Orleans on March 14, 2017. The meeting took place immediately
following the Forum on International Physics (FIP) Annual Reception.
TPN was warmly welcome by Dr. Cherrill Spencer, the Chair of FIP, and
by Dr. Amy Flatten, the Head of the International Office of the
American Physical Society (APS).

Ümit Özkan first woman to win American Chemical Society Energy and
Fuels Division Storch Award
Dr. Ümit Özkan is a pioneer who has often been the
first woman in her field to achieve and be recognized for her accomplishments.
Now a new honor joins her long list of "firsts" -- in the
53-year history of the American Chemical Society's Energy and Fuels
Division Henry H. Storch Award, she has become the first woman
recipient.

significant contributions to breast health related activities. He is
one of the 10 National Consortium of Breast Centers (NCBC) members

Vural on High Performance Infrared Detector Arrays
The infrared (IR) wavebands of ~ 1-14 µm are of
interest for various government, military, industrial, and commercial
applications such as thermal imaging cameras. The key component of a
thermal imaging system is the IR detector. In the late 70's, single
detectors, linear (one dimensional) arrays as well as two-dimensional
arrays containing 32x32 individual detectors were in use for
detection in the infrared spectrum.
