Dear Friends of TASSA,

I am sure everyone is looking forward to summer plans as the 2012-2013 academic year winds down. At TASSA we are looking forward to our inaugural symposium to be held during Fall 2013, which will showcase the power of Turkish women scholars and scientists. We have assembled an impressive group of people who volunteered to be on the program committee. You can find more information on TASSA-WISE (women in science and engineering) in this issue of The Bridge. I am sure this symposium will prove to be another successful gathering of TASSA friends.

Prof. Haluk Ünal

OF THE MONTH

"We have great minds that are living in the US and in Turkey. I think success in science is not necessarily only limited to being successful in classes or being smart. Research and perseverance towards innovation is a challenging path that requires training and the right kind of culture and attitude on top of academic success. Many success  young minds have to realize early on that they need to breathe the culture and live the microenvironment of innovation to be able to develop that skill set to set them into a trajectory that will lead to future great discoveries."

Prof. Mehmet Toner's work featured in TIMES Magazine

http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs141/1109799539773/img/129.jpg

"... An oncologist Dr. Haber, has similarly partnered with Massachusetts General biomedical engineer Mehmet Toner to lead an SU2C-backed team that has designed and built a smart chip device to trap circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in a blood sample. Many tumors release cells into the bloodstream; if a CTC finds purchase in another organ and starts to grow, that is metastasis. The breakaway cells are not easy to spot - there are a billion blood cells for every one of them - but detecting their presence is critical to stopping their spread."
