PRESIDENT'S CORNER
by Prof. Haluk Ünal
Dear Friends
of TASSA,
Happy New
Year! As we start 2013
I wish once again everyone a successful and a healthy new year.
2012 has been
quite important for TASSA. It was the resurrection year; it was the
year when TASSA members once again joined forces in building and
supporting the Turkish Science Diaspora in the US. Our 2012 March
conference was a phenomenal success and since then the TASSA
committees have been working very hard to make a difference. We hope
to announce our 2012 Annual Report in our next issue and I am sure
you would be quite pleased with the many activities TASSA undertook
in the past year.

YOUNG SCIENTIST
OF THE MONTH
Seyda
Ertekin, Ph.D.
Can you please talk about your background? (How did
you choose your major? How did you decide to come to the USA?)
I am a computer scientist and an engineer who is
currently a postdoctoral research associate at Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT). When I was 6 years old, I was elated
when one of my paintings took a lot of attention in an art
exhibition. Seeing all those grown-ups appreciate my painting gave me
huge pride, but apparently for the wrong reason...

Building a Bridge
from Iowa to Turkiye for Children
by Bahri Karacay, Ph.D.
Prof. Dr.
Resmiye Oral
Amid the
hustle and bustle of fast pace American life, some of us keep a
certain dream alive: a dream of doing something for Turkey someday.
There are those of us who in fact make some dreams come true, and
succeed in building a bridge between the US and Turkey. Resmiye
Oral, a professor of Pediatrics at the Carver College of Medicine
of the University of Iowa, is one of those whose accomplishments in
the field of child abuse are both a source of inspiration and a
model for those of us who wants to go after dreams.
