  PRESIDENT'S CORNER

http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs141/1109799539773/img/100.jpg

Dear Friends of TASSA,

Since the last issue of The Bridge in September, TASSA committees have undertaken a number of activities. First, TASSA was invited by the State Department officials to take an active role in the USA-Turkey Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) on Science and Technology Cooperation that was "supposed" to be held in Istanbul. I say "supposed" because the Sandy storm spoiled the planned sessions. But a select group of scientists was able to meet and exchange ideas in Ankara and Istanbul. TASSA Vice President Candan Tamerler represented TASSA in these meetings and you should read her column to be more informed about what went during the JCMs...

By Prof. Candan Tamerler

Sandy left absolute devastation in the Nation. Sandy`s flight impacts not only felt in the US but also overseas for days. After months of preparation for the Nov 1st and 2nd Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) on Science and Technology Cooperation between USA-Turkey, the meeting has been cancelled and it will be rescheduled in the New Year. The meeting is planned to host the first high level official meeting between the two countries. As the meeting plans were shaping up in the USA site, TASSA actively started to play a key role to build up strong and lasting ties in the new initiatives...

A unique study by Postdoctoral Fellow Betül Kacar and Associate Professor Eric Gauche: Placing 500-million-year-old gene in modern organism

http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs141/1109799539773/img/90.jpg

Excerpt and the photo taken from Georgia Tech Website

It's a project 500 million years in the making. Only this time, instead of playing on a movie screen in Jurassic Park, it's happening in a lab at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Using a process called paleo-experimental evolution, Georgia Tech researchers have resurrected a 500-million-year-old gene from bacteria and inserted it into modern-day Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. This bacterium has now been growing for more than 1,000 generations, giving the scientists a front row seat to observe evolution in action.
