PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Dear
Friends of TASSA,
We are very happy to inform you that TASSA Reorganization is complete.
We have formed the Executive Committee, Standing Committees, and
Technical Groups. The individuals who have been contacted and
volunteered to work were very enthusiastic, which encouraged us about
the success of TASSA going forward. I know many of you would have
accepted the invitation to volunteer for TASSA if you were contacted.
But don't be disappointed because one of the charges for these
committees is to get more people involved. So if you want to be
actively involved, please do not hesitate to contact one of the
committee members....

CROSSING THE BRIDGE
by Nilay Papila
Recognizing
the potential impact of "brain circulation era," TASSA aims
to communicate with its fellow members, researchers, professionals and
those who are willing to contribute to and benefit from this era of
transfer/share of knowledge. The most desirable action of this era is
to facilitate the mobility of the researchers and
"bridging" their research with colleagues all around the
world. This objective requires "bridges" and ability to
"cross" them. Introducing the "Crossing the
Bridge" column we aim to explore the means of paying the
"toll on the bridges," i.e. funding opportunities for your
research exchanges between the U.S.A. and Turkey.

YOUNG SCIENTIST
OF THE MONTH

A Conversation
with
Hasan Ayaz Ph.D.
Q: Can you
please talk about your background? A: My first
computer was a Sinclair ZX Spectrum that I received at my 8th
birthday. My parents soon regretted that, as I was captivated by this
magical (!) device that had 128 Kilobytes of memory, required
cassette player to save data and the only TV in the house to operate.
There was something special with it that inspired me to learn the
Basic programming language from its manual books, even though I didn't
know the language of the book, English....

Joint USA-Turkey Conference

The Turkish Ministry of Science, Industry,
and Technology (MSIT) will host the first high level discussion to
advance science and technology cooperation between USA and Turkey
on November 1 and 2, 2012 in Ankara. The goal of this meeting is to
identify mutually beneficial areas of cooperation and mechanisms to
increase cooperation on science and technology by facilitating the
undertaking of joint cooperative research; exchange of scientists,
specialists, and researchers; and the sharing of facilities,
equipment, materials, and data between the United States and
Turkey.
The scientific areas of emphasis for this
meeting will be biomedical research, materials science, engineering
for a greener economy, innovative agricultural technologies,
education technologies, geological and natural hazards, coal
gasification and energy, boron research, and standards setting. The
overarching theme for the meeting is how to turn investment in
research and development (R&D) into economic development
through creating a robust innovation ecosystem. Discussions are
planned to also emphasize how to support and encourage scientist to
scientist cooperation between the two countries, through exchange
programs, virtual networks, and university partnerships, as well as
how science is used to help our governments make more informed
policy decisions.

US Initiatives Aim to Tap
Into Scientists' Skills
The US Department of
State has increased its efforts to promote international
cooperation in science and engineering by launching two new
outreach initiatives.
One
will seek to tap into US-based scientific diasporas - scientists
from developing countries and elsewhere who are currently working
in the United States.
The
second will support the engagement of US academics travelling
abroad in local programmes set up by embassies in the countries
that they visit.
